Little Heroes Hockey Academy is a program in its infant stages designed to offer an opportunity for children with developmental delays to participate in ice hockey. Children with Autism, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and other developmental delays will be able to participate, and develop relationships they would normally be excluded from. Our hockey academy is for children ages 5-15, and will take place from September through March 2018. The goal of the program is to provide learn to skate as well as basic and intermediate skill building. Mostly though, it's to grow the passion and love these kids have to play the sport they love so much.
The second amazing part of the Little Heroes Hockey Academy, is the mentorship partnership with the Chilliwack Chiefs as well as Chilliwack Minor Hockey and local School Districts. Chilliwack Chief players, as well as kids from minor hockey and the school systems will come on the ice and run the little heroes through the drills we provide. This partnership offers a great opportunity to spread awareness about disabilities throughout the community, as well as promote social acceptance and relationships that may not be forged in another setting.
As you are probably aware, the cost to play hockey is significant. What you may not be aware of, is the significant cost of having children with developmental delays. Speech therapy, behavioral intervention therapy, teaching assistants for school, dietary issues and many, many other associated costs make it extremely difficult financially for families of disabled kids. With this extreme cost in mind, we are trying to provide this service to these families free of charge. We feel these families and the kids especially, could use a break. With that said, we need the help of the community to rally behind a great cause financially. We have secured finances covering everything in the programand thanks to many generous donations we are able to fully gear up your child prior to the season starting. (players MUST wear full hockey gear from head to toe).
There is still time to join. We are accepting children with developmental delays within the ages of 5-15. Icetimes will be every sunday morning at Prospera centre in Chilliwack. The league will begin in september and run through march 2018. Please help me spread the word so we can open this opportunity to as many children as possible. Thank you for your support.
